The statement below is the answer for the VENN Diagram topic we discussed in class:
SC.912.N.3.4:
Recognize that theories do not become laws, theories explain laws.
Recognize that not all scientific laws have accompanying explanatory theories.
"In general, a scientific law is the description of an observed phenomenon. It doesn't explain why the phenomenon exists or what causes it. The explanation of a phenomenon is called a scientific theory." It is a misconception that theories turn into laws with enough research; Theories do NOT turn into laws.

Thursday, September 19 B Day
Classwork:
- Notes: 2.4 Enzymes
- Factors affecting enzyme activity:
- Enzyme activity can be affected by a variety of factors, such as temperature, pH, and concentration.
Enzymes work best within specific temperature and pH ranges, and sub-optimal conditions can cause an enzyme to lose its ability to bind to a substrate. - Temperature: Raising temperature generally speeds up a reaction, and lowering temperature slows down a reaction. However, extreme high temperatures can cause an enzyme to lose its shape (denature) and stop working.
- pH: Each enzyme has an optimum pH range. Changing the pH outside of this range will slow enzyme activity. Extreme pH values can cause enzymes to denature.
- Enzyme concentration: Increasing enzyme concentration will speed up the reaction, as long as there is substrate available to bind to. Once all of the substrate is bound, the reaction will no longer speed up, since there will be nothing for additional enzymes to bind to.
- Substrate concentration: Increasing substrate concentration also increases the rate of reaction to a certain point. Once all of the enzymes have bound, any substrate increase will have no effect on the rate of reaction, as the available enzymes will be saturated and working at their maximum rate.

Notes: ATP, Photosynthesis, and Cell Respiration
Memorize Equation: Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts of leaves.
The combination of carbon dioxide, water and light energy produces a carbohydrate (glucose) and oxygen.
Chemical equation: 6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy→ C6 H12 O6 + 6O2.
Memorize Equation: Cell Respiration
Aerobic respiration takes place in the mitochondria and requires oxygen and glucose, and produces carbon dioxide, water, and energy. The Chemical equation: C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O (glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water).
