Monday, March 30
Assignment:
Phase I: Write a paper discussing the coronavirus pandemic. The paper should be AT LEAST 1 handwritten page; it may be much longer.
Do not type it. This writing is meant to be cathartic. Everyone is feeling some type of way. The act of writing with a pen/pencil on paper is therapeutic. Don't believe me? Research it.
Write your first and last name (last name first), Monday's date, and block/period, on the upper right hand corner of each page. Take a picture of the paper and email it to me. The subject line should the same format we used to submit the chick pics and the string man poster project.
Paper should include how the pandemic is personally impacting your life, your friends and family's lives, and the lives of other individuals. (When discussing other individuals, you may write about anyone/anything you choose, including health care professionals, the economy, politicians, first responders, other countries, etc.). You may include data and statistics.
It should be submitted no earlier than Monday, March 30 and no later than midnight on Wednesday, April 1.
Phase II: Create a VENN diagram. Compare the Influenza Pandemic of 1918 to the Coronavirus. Include as many similarities and differences as you can. Use notebook paper divided into three columns. List similarities in the center; differences in outside columns. Complete this along with Part I and have it ready to submit at the same time; hold onto it.
Do NOT submit the VENN diagram with the Phase I paper; wait for instructions on WHEN to submit.
Phase III:
Communicable Disease Research Project
(attached to Canvas)
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website is an excellent resource for a great deal of information. There are excellent videos on the CDC site. Watch a few. Ebola is interesting.
https://www.cdc.gov/
1. Use the list of 35 communicable diseases. Communicable diseases are diseases that we can "catch" from coming in contact with an infected person or animal or a contaminated surface containing the disease-causing agent (pathogen).
In contrast, congenital diseases are diseases that we are born with (present at birth, regardless of the cause) and can't "catch". For example, some individuals are born with heart disease.
2. Create a chart. Diseases on the left side and categories across the top. It may be necessary to tape or glue the paper together to make the information fit on two horizontal sheets side by side.
3. Do NOT write any sentences! Information should be CONCISE and limited to short answers as shown in the examples on the page. Work submitted with sentences will not be accepted; you will have to do it AGAIN!
4. Do not send ANYONE your work to "see" or copy. Do your own research! Plagiarized work will garner a ZERO (0/350).
Please note:
Name:
- Use all names that apply. Example: Human Immunodeficiency Syndrome (HIV), AIDS
- (means = cause
- Should give the initial year of the outbreak and the year the pathogen resurged (if it did), etc.
- (means = original carrier)
- Do not list specific names of drugs that you've never heard of; generalize
- generalize, this is the least mportant category in terms of specifics. The objective here is to undertand the overall general picture of the impact of pathogens on our society.
Symptoms
- List UNUSUAL symptoms germane to that condition. Most communicable diseases present with "flu-like symptoms"... you will see this a lot, Use that, as opposed to writing out each flue-like symptom

Test: Introduction to Anatomy
Homework:
Sketchbook (SB): Figure 1.2 Examples of Interrelationships among body organ systems
Due 9/25-9/26
Do not sketch on the first inside page of your SB.
Open the SB, turn the page and begin sketch on the left side.
Make the sketch large enough to show details of the organs inside the Integumentary System
Notice that the integument is the "border" around the sketch.
(1) Sketch Figure 1.2 and label it using the bold-faced terms ONLY.
For example,
label Digestive System, Respiratory System, Cardiovascular System, etc.
(2) On the "facing page" (the page on the right side), write again the bold-faced system and
underneath it add information.
For example, underneath Digestive System, write "Takes in nutrients, breaks them down, ....... "
(3) Critical Thinking
Underneath the information on the "facing page", Identify 2 systems that are missing and explain
how they might "fit" into this schematic diagram.
Elaborate in YOUR own words!
Original work; do not copy ANYTHING from the book, one another or online!
Do not write anything on the 3rd page in your SB! Work on the 3ed page will NOT be assessed!
